What is medication management? 

Medication management is one of the mental health services available at Prime Psychiatry. Medications are one of the primary treatments for mental health conditions; these medications ease your symptoms and improve your response to counseling and other therapies.

However, when it comes to medication for mental health, no single prescription works for all. And, it can take time to find the proper medicine and dose to manage your symptoms and improve your mental well-being. 

At Prime Psychiatry, our team offers medication management to help you find the right prescription and dose. 

What conditions need medication management? 

Your provider at Prime Psychiatry determines if you need medication management following a psychiatric evaluation. During this exam, we perform various psychological tests to assess your cognitive, mental, and emotional health. 

Our team also reviews your symptoms, mental health history, and medical history. Your psychiatric evaluation determines your diagnosis, helping your provider devise the most effective treatment plan.  

Mental health conditions that benefit from medication management include:

• Depression
• Anxiety
• Bipolar disorder
• Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
• Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
• Panic disorders
• Schizophrenia
• Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)

Not all of these mental health conditions need medication management.  

If our team recommends medication, it may only be short-term. However, chronic mental health conditions, such as bipolar disorder, require ongoing medication management to keep symptoms under control. 

What can I expect during medication management? 

The details of your medication management appointment depend on your diagnosis, symptoms, and needs.  

When starting on a new medication, our team may schedule more frequent follow-up appointments, monitoring your symptoms and medication side effects. We may also change or adjust dosing as needed. 

Once you’re on the correct medication and dose, your medication management appointments may be less frequent. During these visits, our team reviews symptoms and only adjusts your medications when needed.  

Our team also provides medication management when discontinuing psychiatric medications. Abruptly stopping medications may cause serious side effects. Our team works closely with you to lower your dose and monitor symptoms until it’s safe to discontinue your medicine.  

For your convenience, our team may provide medication management appointments through the telepsychiatry service.
