Research shows that Spravato® an esketamine nasal spray, improves treatment-resistant depression just a few hours after use. At Prime Psychiatry, located in Frisco, Texas, our team prescribes esketamine in some instances and monitors you as you take your regular doses. To find out more and see if Spravato is right for you, schedule an appointment by phone or book one online today. Telepsychiatry appointments are also available.

Spravato is a one-of-a-kind nasal spray that works as an antidepressant. Its key ingredient is esketamine, which is very similar to ketamine. Ketamine is an anesthetic commonly used in medical settings, but it also works as an antidepressant in some contexts. However, Spravato and ketamine are not quite the same.

Research shows that Spravato offers results for severe depression just hours after its use, making it different from most antidepressants, which often take weeks to produce results. Only adults can use Spravato, however, and not everyone experiencing depression is a candidate for the treatment.

Our team at Prime Psychiatry decides if you’re a candidate for Spravato after they conduct a detailed psychiatric evaluation. We discuss your diagnosis with you and usually recommend other more conventional treatments for depression before recommending Spravato.

Who can benefit from Spravato?

Spravato is FDA-approved to treat two specific types of depression in adults. Your provider tells you if you have either kind and how Spravato can help. Our team prescribes Spravato nasal spray for:

Treatment-resistant depression (TRD)

Treatment-resistant depression is depression that doesn’t improve with antidepressant medications, participation in psychotherapy, or lifestyle medicine. Typically, our team prescribes an oral antidepressant alongside Spravato for TRD.

Depression with suicidal ideation

If you have major depressive disorder and have expressed suicidal thoughts or actions, Spravato nasal spray may be an appropriate next step in treatment. A typical treatment plan starts with other measures first, like psychotherapy, lifestyle medicine, and antidepressants.

Spravato is not currently FDA-approved for other mental health conditions, even if they benefit from oral antidepressant medications.

What should I expect while taking Spravato?

You take the Spravato nasal spray under the direct supervision of the Prime Psychiatry team. We show you how to use the spray, but you administer your own dosages. You’ll need to stay at the office briefly after taking each dosage so our team can monitor you for side effects.

Because the effects of Spravato can interfere with your driving abilities, you should plan to have someone drive you to the office and back home again for each Spravato procedure. Dosages vary from person to person, and our team might change your plan if you miss a treatment with Spravato.

Severe cases of depression, including TRD, can feel nearly impossible to manage. For more information about Spravato, contact Prime Psychiatry by phone or book an appointment online today.
